Why on earth would you want an icebreaker for a conference call? Your call should be serving a specific purpose with an agenda and expected outcomes. All participants should be ready and prepared to participate when the call begins.

Please help me understand why you think an icebreaker is necessary.

lopayn --

I'm sorry. It was not my intent to offend you or ask for justification. I was actually looking for clarification so I could help you.

Greetings,

Sometimes it helps to get a roll call of who's on the call, then start by introducing the chair and the purpose of the call. (You'd be surprised how many times people don't know the reason for the conference call!) You can also use this time to reinforce any time restraints (each speaker must stay within three minutes; each topic discussion must stay within ten minutes, etc.) Hope that helps.

For certain positions out in the field, we have to do new hire orientation over the phone/computer. I am looking for a fun way to start the call, as an hour on the phone and looking at a powerpoint is not the most exciting way to start your first day.

Lopayn,

I conduct similar new hire training calls on a monthly basis with anywhere from 10 to 20 new hires. I like to start out by introducing myself, letting them know how long I've been with the company and my role. From there I generally pick someone to start. We use WebEx so I know everyone who's on the call. Generally I ask for three or four pieces of info from them. Their name, branch, how long they have been with the company, and what they're biggest challenge is. This usually take about 10 minutes.

You could have them describe their favorite animal (and why it's their favorite) in addition to their introduction.

You could also do Three Truths and a Lie. Give each person a few minutes to write down four things about themselves. Three will be true statements and one will be a lie. Then go round robin, have them read their statements to the group and have the group guess the lie.

Good Luck!

You could do (if you use web or netmeeting) make a lot of questions (for example about the topic you are going to talk about) make a matrix and put all the first letters of the answers. Make a blue and red team an play 4 or 5 on a row
The first team has to tell what letter they want to play... you give the question and if correct you colour the letter to see which questions are correctly answered and which not.

Forgot to say that if you have your introduction you can add some questions like, What would you do when you win the lotery, or tell a joke, etc

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
