Hi Tracy,
Possible resources you might use can be found in two different books. "Implementing Training Scorecards" by Jack J. Phillips and Lynn Schmidt. ISBN 1-56286-314-2. Contact ASTD Press at store.astd.org or by calling 800-628-2783. "Training Cost Analysis" by Glenn E. Head. ISBN 1-56286-000-3. Also available from ASTD. Good luck and let the adventure begin! Lee A. I have seen a number of figures over the years. Its not a case of one size fits all as there are so many variables. Any figures you do use must be based on sound empirical data. Im sure that the two books that Lee recommends are sound. Some of the variables are:
-the complexity of the course -the expertise of the developer in training development -the expertise of the developer in the subject matter -the clarity of the specification -the number of stakeholders -the number of experts involved -the degree to which multimedia/technology will be used -the number of deliverables (trainer guide, student workbook, aids, etc) Id be interested in seeing a table that shows development hours per hour of training taking into account some of these variables. There are several sources out there to confirm previous comments regarding development to facilitation ratios (40:1 or 34:1 - for instructor led, and changes dramatically for web based or other forms of multi-media learning).
http://www.nwlink.com/~donclark/hrd/costs.html Content development in terms of a true L&D function within an organization allows time for the following activities: - the participant guide - the leaders guide - dry runs of materials and activities with other L&D professionals and subject matter experts to ensure content and learning objectives meet the knowledge/skill gap (this is ESPECIALLY critical with any course that contains systems training or the use of technology within the activities themselves). That said, if the materials you create do not contain all of the elements above, you can scale down your training project plan accordingly. I hope that helps! |
