I conduct 2 different change management programs.  The first is for managers and the second one is for the general population.  These are my best sellers (meaning, most in demand programs with my stakeholders).

The program for the general population is patterned after Dr. Spencer Johnson's book, Who Moved My Cheese.  One of the objectives of this program is for them to identify what they value most at work and to stick to it.

I culminate the program with a contest where they need to build a structure within a certain time limit and resources.  During the activity, I change the rules every 5 minutes.  The changes in the rules are somewhat similar to the changes that happen at work (i.e. remove some members, more restrictions, etc.).

This game is usually a competition between 2 or more teams.  After the time limit expires, each team's outputs will be judged using a certain criteria.  Winning team will be given a prize (usually, cheese flavored snacks).

During the discussion, I ask them what changes were implemented, how they felt, what did they do if any to cope, etc.  And my last question is: "How is it that despite the many changes that were implemented, we can still see 2 structures standing?"  They would ultimately answer, "to get the cheese (prize)"  Then I'd conclude that when one is very clear with what is most important to him, changes will not affect them for as long as these changes don't affect what they value most.

I like what you did. How long was each workshop? How many participants did you have?

Many ideas out there but learn how to start and finish from the best, John P. Kotter.  His book, "Leading Change", will take you through the steps and keep you on track.  This was just one book used in my final course through my M.B.A in Organizational Leadership.

I agree.  I'm more of a nuts and bolts HR person than I am an OD type, but John Kotter's book is excellent.  Fairly short, very readable and should be on every HR Manager's bookshelf (after being read, of course).

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
