Hi there. I am looking for some creative ideas for our new hire orientation. I just moved into our HR department and one of my responsibilities is to revamp orientation and create an onboarding process. Does anyone have any suggestions. Our company has around 100 people.

Thanks,

Frank

Hello Frank. I sure dont want to spoil your fun and Im also sure that others on this forum can give you creative ideas. From a different perspective, for a company with 100 employees and that most likely doesnt have a lot of cash to splash around, my first priority would be making the onboarding effective.

Were you asked to revamp the orientation to make it more cool or to improve its effectiveness? If the company wants to pay some attention to the latter, the place to start is to ask what you want to achieve with the orientation program. What are your companys objectives in spending the time and money on onboarding?

Then find out where the current process doesnt meet those objectives. To do this, check out the turnover rates of new hires compared with longer-term employees. How have the comparative rates changed over time? What do people say during exit interviews? Do you conduct exit interviews? What do recent inductees to the organization say about the onboarding process? Do you conduct focus groups to find out what they really think?

Can you see where Im coming from? Its OK to be more creative, just make sure that you are being creative for a purpose.

Thanks Les for your reply. I see where you are coming from. You have some good suggestions. We do do exit interviews, so I think you are right that that is a good place to check out what folks are saying as they have exited the organization.

Sincerely,

Frank

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
