90 Day Introductory Periods

Many companies seem to being doing away with at least the terminology of Probation, Introductory or Trial periods. Managers often tend to interpret them as term with impunity; while the new employees sometimes feel that making it past the 90-day mark is Im home free.
My $0.02:
The important thing is what needs to happen during this time.
1. Assimilate the new emp. into the culture
2. Train new emp. on company-specific processes and procedures
3. Evaluate the new employees skills and performance.
There are others but these are among the top ones on my list. Do you need a formal 90-day Introductory Period to do so? Not really. I encourage managers to evaluate new hires on a continuous basis and give feed back at least weekly. I also ask that they contact me if specific behavioral problems (like tardiness) crop up on a regular basis. We may begin the disciplinary process quickly if there is resistance to compliance.
My current organization had a 90- day Introductory Period in their manual when I came on board a few months ago and Ive made no effort to eliminate it because Ive got bigger fish to fry. The bottom line IMHO is making sure the training, evaluating and establishment of expectations are accomplished for each new hire. If you choose to call it a 60-90- 6 month introductory period just be sure to dispel theHome free and Fire with impunity myths.

Thank you for your response. You have verified my thoughts/concerns. I am shaping the Introductory Period as a review process between myself and managers to see if new hires are going to be long term fits. Once the Intro. Period is completed, I am trending the manager meetings to quarterly event so that it is a continual process for all employees not just new hires.
These meetings include a specific and direct process to follow if an employee is determined to be "at risk" for any reason.
