Does anyone know where I might find actual statistics listing how much training retention happens WITH reinforcement vs. without reinforcement?

The figures from Wilson Learning below are much more broadly applied than just the effects of reinforcement. They apply to transfer of learning to the workplace. Nonetheless, you may find them useful.

Learner Readiness
Motivation to Use 10 to 49% improvement
Motivation to Learn 8 to 42% improvement
Link to career goals 5 to 37% improvement
Self Efficacy 5 to 25% improvement

Transfer Design
Realistic Practice/modeling 10 to 22% improvement
Goal setting 7 to 18% improvement
Usage review 10 to 12% improvement

Organizational Characteristics
Manager support/Coaching 10 to 67% improvement
Peer Support 10 to 42% improvement
Clear Job Relevance 8 to 37% improvement
Work Culture 5 to 20% improvement

This summary can be sourced at http://www.ildp2008.com/pdf/speakers/Michael-Leimbach.pdf The report that supports the 67% figure appears to be at http://asp.wilsonlearning.com/pdf/hpi_study.pdf

Thanks, Les. I'd seen a figure stating a study by the International Personnel Management Association showed that training alone increased productivity by 22.4%, while training plus coaching increased productivity by 88%. That said, I can't get any confirmation on it. There are at least 20 training reinforcement sites out there that have various figures, but no one cites where they get them.

The transfer of training literature is more well-developed than reinforcement of training. A lot would depend on the type of skill. You could look for research that is aimed at a specific skill

It would depend on the types of reinforcers too, the transfer factors cited by Les Allen could be considered reinforcers. It makes sense that the highest percentages are from training plus coaching.

Are you trying to put together a proposal?

I'm looking for a statistic that will compel sales leadership to coach and reinforce training to ensure it's not a training event, but an initiative. In order to do that, I have to find a compelling statistic that shows them the percentage of training retention linked to reinforcement & coaching vs. stand-alone training.

I see what you mean now. First, I wasnt sure what you meant by reinforcement. In the learning theory literature, reinforcement often refers to the giving of positive rewards to training participants when they get something right in the classroom.

The series of Wilson Learning studies really is the most comprehensive series of studies that I have seen on learning retention and transfer to the workplace. The Manager support/Coaching 10 to 67% improvement cited, I think, is very relevant for your context. Their summary report even graphs the difference between training alone and training plus transfer support.

When I get time, I was going to ask them for more source data/detailed reports. Unless you beat me to it, mhathaway If you can get some more information on the International Personnel Management Association study, Id be interested in that too.

Wilson Learning gave us the same study (A Human Performance Improvement Approach to Sales Effectiveness: How Combining Training and Leadership Add Value to the Organization).

ES Research Group rated Acclivus R3 Solutions #1 in training measurement. Acclivus has a very compelling white paper (The Coaching Connection: How High-Performing Managers Influence Behavior and Increase Revenue; http://www.acclivus.com/)that links manager coaching and reinforcement with higher skill application and results, but there aren't any specific stats stating what I need.

I'll let you know if I find it!

The Wilson Learning citation seems like it would be a good fit because it is "apples to apples" in terms of the skills you are looking for.

Unfortunately it takes about 5-10 years for research to catch up and support best practices, I don't think the research on coaching is there yet.

I did find an article by Burke and Hutchins in the Human Resource Development Quarterly summer 2008. They surveyed HR professionals asking for best practices in training transfer and identified coaching as the second most frequently cited best practice.

They have a good introduction, you might find some research threads you can follow.

I requested the Acclivus white paper, The Coaching Connection: How High-Performing Managers Influence Behavior and Increase Revenue a couple of days ago, after filling out their 2,000 question online form. Im still waiting to hear from them.

I rummaged through my Transfer of Learning file and saw a ref to the work of Bruce Joyce and Beverly Showers. In summary, they say they demonstrated the following application rates:

10% Presentation only
10% Presentation + Modeling
15% Presentation + Modeling + Practice
80% Presentation + Modeling + Practice + Coaching

There is more at http://www.smmusd.org/edservices/PD/cotsen.html

My ref refers to their 1988 work. I presume this is their book, Student Achievement Through Staff Development. Yes, this is very old, but it appears highly relevant to what mhathaway was asking about. Deltac, do you have refs to more recent research on workplace coaching on specific skills and not based on survey opinions alone? Id be interested to have a look.

Mhathaway, in addition, you could search the net on
"transfer of training" +research
"transfer of learning" +research
" training transfer" +research

etc
