Reinforced Training Retention Rates
A forum for exchanging ideas about skills training, leadership training, management training, compliance training, e-learning, as well as organizational development and effectiveness.
Does anyone know where I might find actual statistics listing how much training retention happens WITH reinforcement vs. without reinforcement?

I went through the sales training workshop at SPI and they talked a little bit about that. If I remember right, I think that reinforcement/rewards is good for short term performance, but in the long term it's not as reliable as other methods. Not sure if these posts make the link live naturally, but here it is: http://www.spisales.com/Sales-Management-Coaching.aspx

We are starting to talk about two different things - and it only took us two years to diverge!

The reinforcements we are talking about are things that bolster the training experience. Things that help ensure that the learning gets transfered like post-program coaching, enduring materials, follow-up sessions, maybe social media would play a role.

Getting back to the original post, we don't even know how much training transfers without reinforcement.

Here are some citations I found related to the topic, although they don't really tell us "how much" they all provide evidence that training plus reinforcements yield more transfer of training than training alone.

Burke & Hutchins (2008). A study of best practices in training transfer and proposed model of transfer. Human Resource Development Quarterly, 19 (2), 107-128.

Haskins & Clawson (2006). Making it sticky: How to facilitate the transfer of executive education experiences back to the workplace. Journal of Management Development, 25 (9), 850-869.

Martin (2010). Improving training impact through effective follow-up: Techniques and their application. Journal of Management Development, 29 (6), 520-534.

Saks & Belcourt (2006). An investigation of training activities and transfer of training in organizations. Human Resource Management, 45 (4), 629-648.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
