Does anyone have any exercises for leadership training that would address ethics and values? Looking for something requiring their engagement, activity, etc. Thanks

Start with your company's established code of ethics and audit it versus your company's stated values as well as the law. Assuming everything checks out, training exercises should be easy by taking real case examples from problematic situations that have come up in your company can be interactively discussed and reviewed in a learning team environment.

I agree with Joe, maybe you could ask participants to bring in a case to share, that way they would get real value from the course.

We used to have a list of 20 actions, that ranged in severity, from stealing money to stealing pencils, to taking pencils home and forgetting them, making personal phone calls, accepting gifts from vendors in varying amounts.

We had the class rank them from 1-10 on a scale of ethical-unethical. We used this as a discussion starter, and had a debrief about how ethical behavior varied from person to person, and was not always black and white.

For a quick and easy values exercise...begin by asking them if they have personal values...the answer will undoubtedly be "yes." Then, ask volunteers to share one or two. Then ask..."How do others know about your personal values?" (they see me and watch me, etc). And, you say something to the extent of "they observe you and your behavior, correct?" They all agree. Then tie behaviors to values and ask them why it would be important for companies to have values...and then discuss how they can lead to those values by their behaviors...it works out well and you can see that some of them have a personal "ah ha" moment and realize that some of their own behaviors contradict what they are saying...actions have to match your words...I have used this with orientations as we introduce the company values but I have also done this with companies that have updated or are in a change process with a mission, vision and values. I also use it with those I coach. Very good and simple exercise.
