Les,

Thanks for this article. We have just started the process of going Lean companywide. One of our main concerns is how employees will deal with change. Our Lean Team has decided that training is the best way to solve this concern. Your article has confirmed my belief that there is so much more to it. I hope to convey this to the rest of the team.

Hello Les. Im glad you found my article useful. Its funny, or not so funny, that you should mention training. Ive been involved with training for almost twenty years and find, along with many of my colleagues, that training is often considered the first and only solution to all employee performance problems. Yes, it is often a part of the solution, but we see managers grabbing at it as the sole solution. There are a number of reasons for this, which I wont go into here.
In terms of leading successful change, have you seen my CHANGE Approach? My model encapsulates the six aspects of change to which change leaders need to attend if they want to succeed. There is a concise summary at www.businessperform.com/html/change_management_model.html The questions there also act as a checklist for evaluating how your change program is going. I wish you well with your Lean program.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
