Most schools successfully use programs similar to social media for online interaction of classes. Websites like blackboard.com and moodle.com allow users to create a course, have quizzes that are graded electronically, teachers can interact online with students, and students can interact online with each other in forums. This may provide a more controlled and structured environment for learning, versus a social media page. For example, the teacher/moderator can start a discussion and students can post replies that go to the whole group.

Students have a good reason to participate in blackboard and moodle >> grades. Employees generally don't - they probably wouldn't use a private network 'after hours' and their support needs are often limited to technical issues. But managers might have reasons to participate in a network: getting ahead, learning new ways to deal with employees/problems, it might give them a feeling of 'contributing' to what's going on in the company as a whole...?

do it. I was part of a network where I work, I remember what it was called, it was like twitter, but it became too distracting. I would have used it more if the audience was just my team and others with similar job functions. I think it would be a good lifeline for managers, it wouldn't cost much to set it up and you could promote and monitor usage. It would be good if it would limit information overload, streamline information, rather than add to it.

yep, I read a good post the other day (myragan.com) - can't remember what exactly it said - but something like: make sure you add value when creating an intranet..
Maybe survey managers first and see if they would find such a tool valuable? It wouldn't cost much to implement (agree w/ deltac), but is time consuming, so...
