probably the biggest trend is the movement away from classroom/lectures to alternate delivery formats such as on-line modules, various social media and "blended" learning that uses a variety of formats or "action learning" where individuals work on projects while they are mentored or coached.

There is also a push to match learning to business strategies and competancies, not so much a trend as an evolution of best practices.

Hello- We moved to using custom simulations within our Leadership and Executive development. I can't over emphasize how successful it's been.

But it's been an interesting road finding the right provider. They can be pretty costly and take an investment in time, but the results are remarkably engaging. We tried the virtual online sims, but they aren't even close to as effective. Also, the canned stuff isn't worth the time, but they are cheaper.

Here are 3 providers we've worked with (we have stuck with SimDevGroup in the end):

There are 3 companies that we have utilized:
- BTS - They are good, but tend to be on the larger sim side (aka: big $$$,$$$). But they are good if you need multi day large scale programs. They are also a little challenging to work with at time (big company).
- Ensire: http://www.enspire.com - They are also good, but are mainly online based and tend to lean more towards the canned solution. They do custom stuff, but I believe its more like altered canned. Good group to work with.
- Simulation Development Group: http://www.simdevgroup.com - They are equally as good, but focus more towards very rapid, very focused custom business simulations (and thus lower cost). This is good for the 1-2 day programs. They are lots of fun to work with and very bright (believe they are x-apple execs).

Hope this helps.

Ten key Learning and Development trends:

1. The integration of learning and work
2. The move from a ‘push’ to a ‘pull’ culture
3. Support for communities of practice
4. Cross-function collaboration
5. The deployment of networked content
6. Learning and Development’s role in system roll-outs
7. Formal and informal learning
8. The deployment of learning technologies
9. The drive for shared services

10. Analytics/Performance Management/Talent Management

All of these trends come under the umbrella of ‘work smarter, not harder’ and are part of Learning and Development’s increasing focus on performance rather than training. In effect, training is an input (the ‘how’), whilst performance is an output (the ‘what’).
