We are a small, growing company of about 30 employees, and are a reseller of a particular computer software. In order for us to support our customers, our employees must be certified (and recertifed) every 2 years on this software. THis is a requirement of the position.
We have just had 2 (good performers) fail their recertifications. We are unsure as to the next steps. Give them another chance to retake the exam (will cost the company approx $1000)? Terminate them (not ideal as it would be bad for morale and we did not tell them in advance that they would lose their job if they did not get recertified)?
We want to be fair and resonable, yet must have these people certified. These employees have specialized, technical skills that are hard to find when recruiting). This is the first time we have had this problem, and what we decide now will also set a precedent for how we handle these situations in the future.
What does your company do?

I work for a health care organization. We have a tuition reimbursement program that was expanded to include any course work related to recertification and we also pay up to $300 for licensing fees which is higher than the average.

How to Address Flagging Motivation?
How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
