Anyone have something concise that articulates the difference between and Manager and a Director (not a company director, like a board member).
Manager generally is tactically focused, while a director is more strategically focused and possesses more leadership... that sorta thing? tnx. Bd |

In larger organizations, a Director typically is a "Manager of Function", where more than one "Department" reports to the position. A Manager heads a Department which is a collection of individuals typically with very similar and/or complementary job tasks. As an example, in a large manufacturer you may have a "Director of Technoology" who has reporting to him/her a "Maintenance Manager", an "Engineering Manager" and a "Research and Development Manager". Or a "Human Resources Director" may supervise a "Training Manager", an "Employee Relations Manager" and a "Staffing Manager".
Smaller organizations frequently use the Director title to acknowledge someone who wears many hats, or someone who heads a function (possibly with no direct reports). |
