I am currently researching team building activities for our employees to participate in during an off-premise employee development day. I have taken a teamwork graduate class for my degree and played a very fun game called "Toxic Waste Transfer". I can find directions for this game, but have been unable to locate various solutions for the game. Is anyone familiar with this exercise and if so, where can I find the solution?

Side note: If anyone has any other recommendations for a team building exercise? We have about 65 employees, but could break employees into smaller teams and have them compete.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Team building at the workplace will improve the environment at any organization, and will make all the employees better acclimatized with each other. This is turn will make people comfortable with each other, and this will further enable them to work well with each other in order to achieve the organizational goals.

Running a teambuilding for 65 people can be a tricky thing to manage and you will have to have quite a few facilitators to help you run it.  Have you considered breaking your employees into smaller groups and running the sessions on different days?  What's the objective behind the teambuilding exercise? Is there a targetted problem area that you are looking to solve? All these will affect the kind of activities you select for the teambuilding session.

The last teambuilding activity that I had, we had 7-8 people in a team. Their objective was to build a tent blindfolded.  The team was given the tent but was not told what it was.  They first had to figure out what they were given before they put it up, all the while being blindfolded!  The whole exercise took 45 min to an hour and it was great fun! The satisfied smiles on the faces of the participants were all we needed to know how successful the exercise was.

BTW, the solution to Toxic Waste is below:

The solution usually involves doubling the tube over several times, attaching about 8 cords around - everyone pulls on a cord to stretch out a rubber ring which is placed over the waste.  With good coordination and care, the can can then be lifted, moved and tipped.

With this or any other team-building activity, the solution is less important than the debrief about the experience.  You want to get people talking about how they worked as a team (what worked well, what didn't work well, what kinds of roles did they establish implicitly or explicitly) and how this translates into how they work as a team in their regular job.

Ensure you build in sufficient time for debriefing as that's where most of the learning and aha moments happen.  A generic set of debrief questions would include:
  • How do you feel about the activity and the results? or What are your reactions to the activity?
  • What happened during the activity?  What worked well?  What would you do differently if you were to repeat this activity?
  • What did you learn from this activity?
  • How can apply what you learned when you return to your regular job?  How can you apply your learnings to different situations?

You can also use questions focused on particular aspects of teamwork depending on where you want people to focus their learning, e.g. you could ask a series of questions related to communications if that's what you want to highlight.  For example:

  • What were some of the effective forms of communication that you used in completing this task?
  • Ineffective forms of communication?
  • How were differences in opinion handled?
  • In what ways could the the team improve communication processes to enhance problem-solving?
  • A great resource for lots of training games/actitivities is www.thiagi.com

We moved to new digs recently, so there are any number of boxes. Somewhere, I have two three-ring binders of activities. Give me a call to review your objectives and, if we find one or two activities that can help, I'll fax them to you.

Well, what our company usually do nowadays, instead of thinking of the games/team building activities, we just go directly to places where they are built for that very purpose. the last place we went to had a military sort of feel team building. it was fun and since you have 65 people, you can definitely get good discounts on those kinds of places.
