Okay... This is my first post. I don't usually do this, but this column really lit a fire under me. To date, I've enjoyed reading your articles, but Tom, you make a leap of causal faith in saying that such activities (i.e., guidance) serve to drill curiosity and creativity out of children. I think we confuse complex things for simple things too often in cases like these. Maybe a musical analogy would help clarify where I'm coming from: it's impossible to improvise on a tune before you've learned to play it straight.... And how do you know what's 'outside the box' if there's never any boxes?
I understand that you were trying to make a point about rules for rules' sake, but that's rarely what rules are about in classrooms or in workplaces. Sometimes they end up that way because of generational turnover and the next generation doesn't know where the rule came from.
Anyone else have an opinion on this one?

I didn't see Tom's column, but can extrapolate from yours. You are right! The behavior codes and the drill in learning systems is absolutely necessary to establish a basic core of knowledge from which the individual may then explore alternatives.
The lack of the basic acculturation, skills, and knowledge is drowning kids in school and employees in business. Both expect to get by on feel good emotionalism without having acquired the expertise to make a positive contribution.
