Wait a second there Jim! Generational differences exist loud and clear, and as a young up-and-comer who considers herself very much a Gen Xer in an all Baby Boomer work-world, I couldn't disagree

Jim, I believe you are not only on the mark with your comments, but are exceptionally articulate in making them. I agree wholeheartedly. The "debate" over generational personality distracts from more important issues in HR.

Thanks for your comments. I got into this issue for two reasons:

1. Based on the evidence provided, I am against this attempt to create an artificial category within the workforce.

2. I thought that the writings on the therory of the generational personality were so awful that they put our field in a very poor light. HR practitioners should - like professionals in oher fields - offer critical analysis.

As a child of a Ph.d family therapist, I can attest to the complexity of individuals, and how family origin and "stage in life" play a much larger role than the fact that I was in 4th grade when the Challenger blew up and that I played PacMan and saw ET the first time around.

I'm 25 going on 40...watching all my peers being super individualistic in their opinions and manner of living because they really don't have any major life responsiblities, yet.

At my college alma mater, students and alumni have been saying for 30 years: The college is getting more conservative! In the 80's punk was in, so people dyed their hair. In the 90's, piercings where in, so we look more normal hair-colored, but we're being rebels in a cultural-context. People at any age, reflect no only their birth years but the culture they live in! Most hippies of the 60's are now more conservative, and work on Wall Street.

As my father says, wait until young Gen X'ers have a mortgage and children!!

I've always felt it was a shame HR has been less quantifiable and more antectodal.

Daily Q&A

How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?

Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
