I was recently having a discussion with some peers about why an employee should provide an employer with their know how or tacit knowledge picked up over their lifetime of experience. The comment went something like this 'is it not intrusive to expect an employee to share all they know [about a particular professional area for which they have been employed].
My response was that in effect an unwritten contract existed (or should exist) between employer and employee. The employer contracts to provide an employee with opportunities for learning and development and enables employees to be creative and innovative as well as showing them respect and trust.
An employee on the other hand contracts to act in a trustworthy manner and will willingly share their knowledge and skills (otherwise why would an employer want them! You could be the most qualified/experienced person in the world but if you aren't prepared to both bring this to bear and to share this then there is no purpose to you being there).
What do others think?

Unfortunately most, and perhaps all, employers would tell you that while the employee has contracted to provide the employer with all the pertinent knowledge and skills he/she posesses, the employer is obliged only to pay the employee, and not to provide educational and other learning opportunities as you suggest.

Daily Q&A
How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?
Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
