Mark Love's article reminds me of an experience I had recently.

After presenting an all-day seminar on employee motivators and demotivators, an attendee came up to me and said that my presentation had convinced him to find a different company to work for. He was a trainer for a company that had a very strict policy on at will employment. He said that the HR Manager was insistent that he make sure that every new employee was reminded during orientation that they were employed at will. They were told that if they didn't meet certain standards during the first 30 days, they would be terminated. I asked him what the employee turnover rate was there. He replied, "130%."

When we continually remind employees that they are employed at will, we are reinforcing in their minds that we consider them to be as valuable and as disposable as a used diaper.

Yet we have the nerve to tell them we expect and demand some degree of loyalty? Some reciprocity might be in order here.

Stop managing scared and start managing smart!

A turnover rate of 130% is a clear indication that the wrong people are getting through the screening process. Replacing employees is very expensive problem but solving the turnover nightmare is not expensive nor terribly difficult. The hard part is convincing managers who have had to endure such disastrous turnover rates that there is a cost-effective solution that has an ROI well above 1,000%.

Constant reinforcement of the"our way or the high way" syndrome is common in many offshore centers - it leads to worker depression and a feeling of powerlessness - and as one other poster mentioned - a lack of loyalty - who wants to be thrown away like a dirty rag at the whim of some overbearing manager? Many offshore Managers do not seem to realize that many poorer people would rather starve than work..yes indeed..and that this approach to developing relationships with new employees is fatal.

Most companies in the American capitalist society under the principle of the "Golden Rule" - "He who has the gold makes the rules."

So long as it is not excessively arbitrary or capricious (which would invite employees to seek out Union representation) there should be no problem in informing employees that they work at the will of the employer. They should undertand that other than the legal rights and cultural practices/ precidents they have no say in what their wages, benefits, terms and conditions of employment are.

On the other hand employees are free to leave the employer at any time, with or without notice, without fear of reprisal or retaliation.

Obviously, some management attuned to the needs of the employees (and at the insistence of the Company Lawyer)have incorporated a dispute resolution procedure into the workplace to receive and act on actual or imagined issues, ranging from absenteeism to sexual harassment.

employees that work at the will of the employer do so whether they are told or not, right?

What purpose does the threat of termination upon hiring serve?

Been there, done that. After I was hired at one company , I was told that the Policy was that no one under manager level was kept beyond one year. Needless to say, turnover was fantastically high, morale was below the radar -go figure.
