The 85-year old who doesn't want to retire may be correct in saying that he might die if forced to retire. Some of the stats I've read about people who have been forced to retire before they are ready, confirm this. The solution might be for the employer to provide retirement lifestyle planning so that all employees can plan ahead for the transition to retirement and especially help them plan how they can replace the main benefits of work after they leave the workforce. The emotional and social costs, as well as the financial are too daunting for some folks. Compassion, understanding and a helping hand to help people make this transition could go a long way! You too will be old one day!

I find it difficult to understand how someone who has been doing heavy lifting for years and therefore is trained and physically fit, becomes unfit in his/her late 50s. Those employees should have strong muscles and be more than fit to do the job, unless, and here is were I am most suspicious, the job itself is the one creating all the problems by wearing them down. And you said 50s, not 60s or 70s, so I see no reason for this situation to occur unless the job itself is causing it, in which case you better fix the job and not the employees!
