Hi Ann:

Interesting study. Our research and measuring has been more on what motivates (or de-motivates) people to be activly engaged while at work. Many people show up, but then don't contribute and end up a waste of oxygen.

So, if I were going to do that study, I would ask about $$, fear of discipline, workload, deadlines, socialization, peer pressure, company loyalty, customer loyalty, enjoy work, not ready to make job change, what is expected, influence on others (if I take off, others may do the same).

I also think that I would ask some overall questions about their perception of the organization for which they work to determine the respondants attitude about the leadership and culture. This will show a correlation between the responses of why they go to work, what the value that they place on the organization.

I hope this is helpful

I have found the best way to motivate employees is to involve them in the daily goals or decisions. Discuss issues with them and keep them informed. As Zig Zigler once said " people wont care what you know until they know you care" In my opinion, nothing motivates people more then feeling like an important part of the companies vision.
To know what they say or do can make a difference.

Hear, hear! Being involved is key, because it better connects workers to the mission and goals of the company. People have an inherent need to make a contribution, and if they can clearly see how what they do on a daily basis contributes to the overall success of the firm then that is something to feel proud of. Personally, I am extremely motivated when my work is valued and acknowledged as a part of the larger effort to successfully accomplish the overall goals of the firm. What gets me up in the morning, other than the need to earn a paycheck, is knowing that I have a contribution to make that will have an impact (however small) and be appreciated (even if it's just a simple thank you).

Look at the work of Meyer and Allen who designed an organizational committment scale that differentiates between committment motivated by tangible rewards, personal work ethics, and attachment (which is essentially engagement, citizenship, being a good agent).
