Hi All,
I started a new position. Unfortunately, my manager is not strategically minded. I failed to ask that question of him during my interview.

My HR background and education is strategicially focused. How do I approach him on changing his approach without insulting him or having him feel threatened?

Thank you for your input.
Camille

I have found that the best approach is to inquire as to his/her past practice - "Have you ever experienced (the situation)...", or "What do you think about this (method)?", or "Would you consider...?".

It shows that you respect the boss's experience and insights. It also allows him/her to "thoughtfully evaluate" your suggestions as well as insulating you from being viewed as overly ambitous/ threatening.

Maybe you don't. It could be that the organization WANTS the manager this way. It could be that regardless of your approach you will threaten this manager.

perhaps an alternative would be to inject strategic thought into each presentation you make to your manager. eventually they will get it or explain to you that this isn't how they do business here.

Hello Camille. In the politically sensitive position that you are in, the personal approach advocated by paladinhrc will get you further than the more formal approach in which you put your ideas in a formal presentation. Putting your ideas in writing in presentations and proposals gives your manager a lesser opportunity to save face. A face to face conversation does allow this and also improves your credibility, as you show that you can deal with issues on a personal level. I wish you the best. And if it doesnt work out, it may be time to update your resume.

Vicki if you'll note my advice was in presnetations TO the Manager in question. I agree with you that making those presentations and thereby ambushing the manager is not prudent.

Daily Q&A

How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?

Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
