I'm a semi-regular on SHRM's HR Talk forum and "heard" about Mr. Hollon's editorials on SHRM and the HR profession. I registered here to read what all the fuss was about and am now applauding Mr. Hollon's forthright and blunt description of what SHRM has become.

I am eagerly awaiting the uploading/access of the letters submitted by fellow SHRM members (Raymond Presley, SPHR for one). Some of us have been beating our heads in frustration against our computer screens for the past few years. I hope that WFM will be the spark that finally ignites a concerted effort for SHRM members to send a strong message to our "professional organization" to focus on the profession of true HR practitioners instead of catering to vendors and other revenue sources.

I think the time is ripe for an alternate association to form and would love to know if there are any promising ones out there.

I am one of those that is both disgusted at the lack of leadership from SHRM in these issues and who has also decided to vote against SHRM's lack of leadership by leaving the organization. years of trying to enter into dialog with them as they continue to pander to anybody with an interest in HR instead of the real professionals causes that to occur.

One need only look at what is occurring in how SHRM does lead to understand that the single greatest detractor from professional recognition and advancement of the profession of HR is SHRM. It began when staffing companies (Temp agencies, etc) were allowed to join SHRM. Then headhunters. The efforts to make certification easier and drive to create more certifications, the lessening of the qualifications needed to join SHRM. I could and have gone on with great detail.

This isn't about excluding as some would believe. it is about demanding a defined body of knowledge that goes beyond basic transactional and enters into the realm of how WE help businesses succeed. We don't do that by party planning, counselling on body odor issues and allowing "anyone with an interest into our professional association.

SHRM won't get it because they don't want to. Millions of dollars in revenue are at stake here and SHRM is more concerned with the revenue than with the advancement of the profession.

SHRM leadership literally ran away from some of us who tried to discuss this with them. we have been making the same points made by Mr. Hollon, articles in fastCompany and Forbes for years. SHRM leadership is afraid to lead. All they are interested in is the money.

If that is what they want then fine, it isn't a crime to want to make money. They just won't do it with my money. I will, and have, joined professional associations that are focused on advancing the skills of the profession and not concerned with becoming the first million member HR clerk group.

Daily Q&A

How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?

Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
