What type of industry are you in? I am in manufacturing and we still have each department take their breaks at the same time. We have 5 seperate departments, each of which takes a different time break. However, when one department goes on break they have what we call Kaizan members (aka machine specialists) watch the entire department for the break. Shuting down a line is not an option, we continue running and have 2 or 3 people watch all the machines. We haven't had any issues yet, and I don't believe we will.

I suggest you not break up employee breaks, if you want to keep the synergy and promote team building, spliting them up on break could set that back. I recommend looking at your production figures, talk with the managers on the floor, and see if you can't keep the departments together on their breaks.

Thank you. We are civil engineers and only have 30 employees in this particular office. Unfortunately, the only people that are taking these breaks are smokers, and when all 6 of them take their break at the same time, causes problems. We are needing to figure out how to curtail this without offending anyone.

If "not offending anyone" is a criterion for addressing an issue you will never get anything done.

There doesn't have to be a policy for the employees' supervisor to tell them that they are spending too much time away from their work stations, that the absences are interfering with getting the work done, and that they may not leave the department without adequate coverage.

First off, you need a written, posted (preferably in the break room) policy for breaks. How many? How long? What times are acceptable? Once that is in place the supervisor needs to step up and enforce it. Unfortunately, smokers (of which I am one) do tend to take breaks that are too long or too frequent. But they should be subject to the same rules as everyone else. Like Cynbrandt said, you shouldn't be worried about "offending" anyone.
