A workforce with low morale and little inspiration can spell disasters for a company. I've found some pretty useful advice from a book by Dr. Darryl Cross called "The Dark Clouds at Work: How to Manage Depressed Staff in the Workplace Whilst Increasing Morale & Productivity" [http://www.depressionatwork.com], I think that it answers the topic question very well. Highly recommended.

A low-cost morale booster is the simple "Thank You" note. Blank cards are cheap, and all you have to write is "We appreciate the great work you did on Project X. Thank you for all you do!"

Everyone likes to be appreciated and, more importantly, to have their good work NOTICED.

Agree an employee survey may find culture changes are needed. But in the interim, how about a âDiversity Dayâ â Iâve done this before a couple times â and itâs perceived very well. Hereâs some info from the last one we ran: âDiversity Day is a day to celebrate and embrace who we are, no matter what race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, nationality, or disability. A day to reflect on and learn about different cultures and ideologies, and a day to vow acceptance and tolerance in both the community and workplace. Bring in music, wear clothing, and/or print a flag for your desk from your country of origin. A world map will be hanging up outside of Human Resources for employees to put a push pin on their country of origin. Departmental Pot Luck lunches â bring in a dish native to your country of origin for all to taste! Native to this area, Philly Soft Pretzels will be available for all to enjoy!

There is a Healthcare and Prescription discount card/program that works with existing benefits or as a stand alone. It's a great moral booster because it is an additional benefit with no cost to the company or employee, and it doesn't change the way you manage benefits. It is transferable, so an employee can allow a family member, sometimes a relative they are helping, enjoy the discounts. There's no enrollment process and the card is accepted almost everywhere. What's the catch? The supplier wants to sit down with each employee for 15 minutes, explain how to use the card and show them a supplemental benefit they could add if they want. It's very low key and I think VERY much worth it. They sell this card for $50 a month on television so the percieved value is fabulous.

I wanted to share a really cool idea that one of our partners uses as both a charity fundraiser but also views as an employee morale booster - they took a new twist on the old idea of Casual Days and instituted "Flip Flop Fridays" with the donations going to the St. Baldrick's Foundation to support childhood cancer research.

The full article is below but here is a great quote (and why I am sharing this under a post about morale, which just happened to catch my eye):

Kristin Downey, Director of Human Resources at AmWINS Group, Inc., says they view it not only as a great way to support a cause their firm has embraced, but as a way to enhance employee morale. âSome mornings it just makes getting off to work easier knowing you can slip into a pair of jeans and flip-flops. Our employees love the campaign, and love the many ways they have found to support St. Baldrickâs!â

Sometimes it is the little things that just ake it fun to come to work!

We have posted greeters at the entrances in the morning to welcome & thank employees for coming to work (with or without a goodie of some kind). Small, unexepected breaks from "normal" can be very powerful in raising or maintaining morale and can be done as frequently or infrequently as you like without setting then breaking expectations of repeat performances.

I think having some novelty at the workplace can be a good thing. Surprising employees with someone unexpected - even a cupcake - can be a nice treat.

I'd recommend reading "Drive" by Daniel Pink to get more substantive ideas about how to boost morale and employee engagement.

Daily Q&A

How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?

Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
