I work for a mortgage company. Of course everyone knows what the industries going through at this time. We had up to 700 employees at one point. We are down to about 400 now. It is torture not knowing everyday if your next. They have been laying off 10 here 20 there 2 here 4 there. This has been dragging on for a few months now. What could be the reason for the slow torture instead of the sudden death of all, or a good amount of us?

Without knowing all the particulars - I'd say buisness continuity would be one reason not to do one massive layoff. There are still clients to service, cross-training to be done, and maybe the hope that business could pick back up and they don't want to lose good employees. There could be a number of reason. I know the frustration you are feeling. I went through this in a previous position. It truly is stressful for the employees -- but quite honestly, a relief when the hammer finally fell.

It will happen in most of the firms these days, in hard times companies are reducing their expences like targetting higher paid employees and cut the facilities for the employees. Yes its seems like a torture for the working employess in the dangor of job insecurity.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
