What is your practice when terminating an employee when they have personal items at their desk? I find it kind of humiliating and uncomforable to escort an employee back to their desk to have them pack it up in the presence of their coworkers. So if I tell a termed employee to make arrangements with me to get their stuff at another time, should I have their belongings packed up and waiting for them, this way they don't have to go back to the work area? Or will this cause a potential problem?

No matter how uncomfortable, escort the employee to their desk, provide a box and let them pack up. Ask them to go through all the drawers thoroughly. Packing up and providing items at a later date may cause some issues - "I had a very expensive camera in my desk that is now missing".

Ditto what Boilerfan says. You don't want to run the risk that something is not accounted for and if the termed EE packs their own belongings, this doesn't happen.

agreed that the employee should pack their own things. I'm not sure if it would work for you but we the department the employee works(ed) in go home early. Then the employee packs up after everyone else is gone. It's usually about an hour or two early (9 to 5 usually) and it works becuase each department's relatively small and in their own room. Everyone knows what's going on but they enjoy the paid hour or so off. I don't know if it cuts down on the awkwardness or not, since someone's still leaving. But it's useful if we think there's going to be a problem.

Daily Q&A
How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?
Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
