College Senior Needs HR Career Advice

I will be graduating in May with a Bachelor of Science and Business Administration/HR. I have three years of experience in recruiting and processing applicants for the U.S Navy. I also have six years of experience in administration, customer service, training and development in the Navy. Most of HR job required years of experience in the field or specific knowledge of HR programs (which I do not have).  Should I set for any administrative job and work my way in to the HR department? My long term goal is to become a HR executive (someday).

Can we assume that you have had a similar conversation with the college's placement office?

Your experience sounds fine and should easily qualify you for various recruiting/HR positions.

There are many HR positions that do not need more than 2-3 years experience. Many HR positions do not require a lot of experience to start.

What is more important (IMHO), is the quality of the work you accomplished and your communication skills.

I agree that your service and your degree set you apart from a lot of your peers who, after majoring in sociology or philosoophy, now think they'll go into HR because they "like people".

You might want to go to some military job fairs.  Youll find companies who are more than well disposed towards hiring ex-military - they're there because they've found that most ex-military have highly developed senses of responsibility and work very well with others.

Recruiting is a very good start for an aspiring HR person, so leverage your recruiting experience!  Go for the recruiting jobs.

Although you say you want to be an HR exec, you might also apply for HR jobs in the government. You get automatic preference because you're a vet and you qualify for a higher level of position because you ahve a degree.  And your military time counts towards retirement.

I would strongly advise you to seek HR jobs now rather than trying to break into HR later.  I think it's much easier to start off as an HR Associate or Jr. Recruiter and move up within HR, then start as a general Admin Assistant and move departments later.  You've got HR experience, so you have a head start on many folks trying to break into HR.  I know a few people who have tried to move into HR later in their careers, and faced challenges, not to mention the salary cuts they'd have to take to move into a junior position in an areas they hadn't worked in.

I agree about going to military job fairs, that's a great idea.  I disagree about working in HR for the government, but that's a personal preference, I have always worked in private industry, and I haven't been impressed with HR departments at the local government level. (they are sometimes even still called Personnel!)

I would recommend looking at SHRM's job postings, as well as the local HR Association in your area.

Good luck in your search - HR is a great career!

I understand what you are going through.  I am working through it now.  After nine years, I left the Navy and went to work on the Railroad, thinking I would wait to get back in with the Government.  I accepted a job last year and now realize how difficult it is to get anywhere.  I am trying to now find a way out to some place with flexability, which is not the Government.  If you want to be in the C-suite, stay away from the Government.

Do not concern yourself with C suite. That is a one of a kind job. Figure out what part of HR you have the greatest passion for and find the employer that needs that role filled/those problems solved. Stay in the areas you love and you will attract the posiiton that you want.

Thank you all for your advices. I have decided to target HR jobs only. So far,  I like everything that I been studying in college. I am  aware that the theory is different the actual application, so it is not going to be easy. I am planning to looks for jobs in small companies. I want to be able to work in all of the areas, and find I out which I am going to specialize in. I am really exited about getting a job and applying everything that I have learned.

I'm not so sure about starting with a small company. It's been my experience that going from a large company to a small company is much harder than going from small to large.  The larger companies have been doing HR for years and they tend to do it right more than small companies so it's a good learning experience.  And if you can get with a large company right out of school it's like getting a Fortune 500 blue ribbon seal of approval.  Everyone knows the large companies and its the first place recruiters generally go to find talent.

Just my 2 cents
