Good Afternoon:
If I were looking to switch careers and enter the world of human resources, how would I go about this? Can you recommend any steps I should take or paths I should follow? I have a B.A. in Sociology and a background of sales in the HR community - predominately with ATS systems and HRIS/HRMS systems. Through my experience, I have a greater interest in being part of HR instead of selling to HR. Any response or suggestions would be greatly appreciated- |

58% of the people who attend The Five OClock Club end up changing careers. Here is our basic advice to them:
Read the industrys trade journals. Get to know the people in that industry or field. Join its organizations; attend the meetings. Be persistent. Show how your skills can be transferred. Write proposals. Be persistent. Take relevant courses, part-time jobs, or do volunteer work related to the new industry or skill area. Be persistent! Moving into HR is not a specific target. People do many different things within the HR area. Be more specific about exactly what you would do in HR. Talk to people in the field and find out specifically what they do versus your skills and interests. For example, do you have analytical skills? Systems skills since you have been dealing with HR systems? Perhaps a step into HR could be in the selection of vendors for HR systems? Hello Cathryn,
Like you, I considered a career in HR many years ago and successfully made the shift and also thrived in it. An important consideration for you is to reflect on why you want to make the change and really see if you are up for the challenge. Go and talk to as many people as you can from a variety of sources and if possible even consider some form of shadowing to see what people in HR do. Like most areas of work, HR also has many different types of jobs/roles - so first spend some time learning about them which will then help you select a few you may be interested in.
