Hello there,
I have 15 years experience in HR in my country. I have been in US for 7 months only and was recently hired as HR Manager in a unionized manufacturing company (300 people). I am expecting to meet all the Managers on my first day at work. I would like to inform them about my initial activities/plans:
1. familiarize myself with the existing policies, procedures, CBA, facilities.
2. meet my colleagues individually to know their operations, hr concerns, how I can help them, etc.
3. meet my staff
4. conduct an internal audit and use that as basis for establishing new policies, revising, if necessary, and determining legal compliances.
5. meet with union officers.
6. I will be reporting directly to Director of Administration and Finance, so I will know also from him what he thinks I must prioritize.

I will appreciate any input from the members on how to make my first day (or first few weeks) right. Is this the right thing to do? I am new in the US workplace. I learned my lesson in my past company where I outrightly implemented new policies (changed some) and it created tension and negative reactions from the members (the company was also unionized).

Thank you.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
