Does anyone have a feel for what is perceived as the gender make-up of the HR field by percentage. I know it may swing back and forth by each company, I was just wondering if the profession is more male or female occupied. At my company, we have an HR department that has six members. Four are female and two are male.

Most statistical surveys show females to be the dominant gender in R while males hold the majority of executive HR positions

Thanks for the reply. I wonder what is the reason for this trend? Are men not interested in the clerical side of the HR business.

I can't speak for how you conduct your HR business but my operration has very little resources devoted to clerical. I divide it into two components; transactional HR and strategic. Both sides have male and female and neither would be described as a clerical function.

Thanks for the reply. Our business unit employs one strategic and three transactional HR personnel along with three employees dedicated to clerical functions. The department head is male along with the trainer all other personnel are female.

I did a quick search of a slice (4000 HR names) of our own HR database and here's what I found.

The SVPs and EVPs are about even: 50% male and 50% female.

At the Director level, it's 28% male and 72% female.

At the manager level, the breakdown is 16% male and 84% female!

We do not keep statistics on lower-level HR employees, such as clerical.

So, yes, proportionately more males are rising to the top of the organization.
