After getting laid off some months ago, I though it would be easy when I moved back home to find an hr job in Chicago, but I haven't received any breakthroughs as of yet. I just got my Master's in HR and Industrial Relations over a year ago and have had good work experiences, although it doesn't hold up to 5 years of experience that some companies look for. I also feel that some employers try to pigeonhole me as an hr analyst since that's what I did in my last job. How do you transition from an hr analyst to an hr generalist? It also seems like the Chicago employers would value an education in hr plus a couple of years experience. How long do I have to wait?

I perfectly understand what you are going through. I got my MBA in HR and I continually get "stuck" in that HR analyst position, however I have the generalist title (for now). My only help that I give is be as flexible as you can with your what you are looking for. What was your title at your last company? If you don't want the analyst type of position I would play up other skills or experience that you had like compensation or benefits. The more emphasis that you put on all of the analytical projects that you did in your last position, the more likely the recruiter would not consider you. If you would like me to look at your resume, please email to me at lahellm@yahoo.com. Don't give up!
