I worked for a company for 7 years, I was let go (fired) for telling another co-worker that a job may be opening in my department because a temporary worker was leaving before I should have. I was a dedicated worker for this company. I was the receptionist and a good one. I did a lot more than what you think a receptionist would do. They didn't give me any warnings, told me that I was suspended for 3 days, on the third day they called me in an fire me for birch of confidentially. Why couldn't they just give me the 3 days off? I was just trying to help the company to fill the position quicker. Could they have worked around this...not in a bad or illeagal way to make it work for the both of us?

They could have but for some reason chose not to. From their perspective it was a breech of confidentiality. How did you know the temp was leaving? What is the normal process for posting job openings?
Was it in your job description to help recruit?

What might have happened is that you might have unintentionally told someone about the job that they would NOT want in the job for one reason or another. And now they have to come up with a reason why that person won't get the job. They may have already had someone else in mind, etc.

Being in HR, our past receptionist could not seem to understand the difference between what she could tell people and what she couldn't. I was amazed at some of the information she gave to anyone who called. At times, we had to speak to her about it. And she had no clue that she shouldn't.

It sounds like you overstepped your bounds (even unintentionally) and they felt like you were a liability. In an "at will" state, they can terminate you for no reason at all, just so it is not discriminatory.
