I am being considered for a position as an Organizaitonal Development Consultant at a company in NYNY. The job will last about a month and is through an agency. NY is about 4-5 hour train ride for me, hence there would be travel expenses. When I got the call I stated that I would need an hourly rate plus travel expenses. The agency came back with an all inclusive hourly rate that seems extremely low.

Does anyone know what a reasonable hourly rate would be?

Thanks!

Not knowing what the position responsibilities are and what your background is makes it tough to estimate what a good rate would be.

If you're going through an agency, the agency is going to take a cut, perhaps as much as per hour going to them as it would be to you. And they'll try to maximize their profit on you. I doubt there will be travel reimbursement for a contract like this.

IMO, a 4 - 5 hour commute is something crazy Californians do. 9 hours at work, up to 10 commuting leaves 5 for being at home. Not worth it for a low hourly rate.

I plan on staying in a hotel for 3 - 4 nights a week. Which is why I was a little perplexed when travel expenses were not included.

Hi
it is not unusual for agencies to have an inclusive rate. Just be prepared to refuse an offer if it is too low, while individuals accept a low rate the agencies will keep offering it! they don't care if you do not make enough - they just want their slice!

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
