I am a student writing a paper on Employment Drug Testing. The assignment is to choose a profession you would like to have and research the current status of drug testing as it applies to this job in the U.S. For the profession I chose, a Human Resources Manager. Outside of working for the federal government, is pre-employment drug testing required for HR professionals?

No. While companies may choose to have all new hires subjected to a drug screening test, I would be at a loss to come up with any other reason to do so.

Our organization requires pre-employment and random testing of ALL employees. That does include HR and excutive levels.

I have seen pre-employment drug screens used in two ways.
1) Applied to specific jobs, usually those related to driving or the operation of machinery.
2) Applied to all new hires.
If your company uses the latter its important that HR and other management positions be included. Exempting ourselves from it would seriously compromise our credibility.

My organization tests all new employees, it only seems fair. I once worked for a company that only tested the truck drivers and others who operated heavy equipment, to save money back in the day when these procedures were more expensive and when there weren't any insurance incentives in place. But that caused morale issues, especialy when some folks were fired for testing positive and they knew that they weren't the ony ones who used. Drug use in the workplace creates hostile environments, it really is best to have policies that apply to everyone.

Daily Q&A
How to Address Flagging Motivation?
How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
