Have any of you taken HR classes or seminars that you recommend. I'd like to take a class or classes in the second half of this year that are pre-approved by HRCI if possible. (I have my PHR and I'll be taking the SPHR in May of 2008, so I'd like to take classes that will count toward my re-certification by continuing education within the next 3 years.)

My recommendation to you would be to focus more on those educational opportunities that will benefit your career and career knowledge. Focusing on what HRCI approves or has not yet approved will prove little value to you.

You'd be amazed at what exactly HRCI will give you recert credit for that isn't on their "list."

Try educational sessions in the operations area of your industry, seek professional certification within your industry instead of simply in HR. Learn more about finance and accounting procedures, etc. Learn a foreign language even.

Those would be my recommendations.

HRPro is correct in that Ive found HRCI to be fairly flexible on granting credit for workshops and seminars which werent pre-approved as long as you can submit adequate documentation as to the content, the length and the presenters qualifications. I still keep an eye out for free/low cost recert. options such as Employment Law seminars put on by law firms.

I suggest that you review all of the methods of getting recert. points like training, writing articles, holding an office in a professional organization and such. Im up for recert. next year so Im planning to request credit for rewriting a couple modules of our company training program.
