Some folks take and pass the exam right out of college. (They cant use the certification initials until tenure requirements are fulfilled). I took a prep course at a local university but it was basically just teaching the SHRM Learning System. Having been out of school for over 30 years at the time, the course was a big help to me. Some people go to prep courses taught by local SHRM chapters, other get together with study groups. Some use the SHRM Learning System while others use different text books. Ive heard of people swear that they did absolutely nothing to prepare for the exam and passed easily.
The bottom line is that there is no one way to get there. Its what works best for you. HRCI has some trial tests I believe and Ive heard there are alternate web sites with different tools for sale as well. If you check around on different boards you can often find the training materials for sale cheaply after each testing period.
Good Luck

Rice University offers a prep class for the PHR and one for the SPHR. I believe the PHR prep course uses the SHRM learning system. At least they did when I took it a couple years ago. You may want to check your local SHRM chapter and see if they offer any prep courses as well.

I recently passed the PHR exam and did not take a prep course on recommendation from some friends that took classes based on the SHRM learning system and found them to be lacking especially when looking at the cost of the course. I studied independently using two books I'd purchased. I also took the HRCI practice tests -- one at the beginning of the study process to assess my weaknesses and then one near the end of the study process to see how I'd improved. Also, the book I purchased had a CD with 2 practice test for each test (PHR and SPHR) included.

I studied on my own using a book I bought at Barnes & Nobel. I passed the test - but I thought it was really hard. You can check EBAY about buying the SHRM Learning CD's - I think I would do that if I had to take it over again.

Daily Q&A
How to Address Flagging Motivation?
How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
