Hi! I want to take up the PHR certification, but I have 3 years of HR experience in India. So I am eligible to take up this exam?? Also, I have been trying to apply for jobs here in the US. All of them tell me that I am over qualified for the jobs since I have a MBA in HR too. So is it ok for me to take up the certification or would it again be an hindrance for getting work here? In case I plan to take up the certification, can anyone please recommend me the books for PHR? Thanks.

Having a degree, I believe you would be eligible to take the PHR certification exame. Whether you could use the PHR designation or not would depend on whether your tenure as an HR professional was at the exempt level or not. Suggest you check the requirements on HRCI.org.

If most of your experience in HR is in India the PHR will definately improve your ability to compete in the U.S.. While it has been awhile since I had operations in India where I needed to be "up" on their HR law I do know their are significant differences. Take your time and prepare well.
Best of luck to you. I might suggest looking for a certification prep course through your local university. HRCI can assist you in locating the nearest one.
