I just recieved all my materials for the PHR certification and it looks like I have a lot of studying ahead of me. For those that have taken the PHR exam and successfully passed, how much time per week did you set aside for studying and how long did it take until you felt confident enough to take the exam?

Because I work full time as a Corporate Recruiter, I probably won't have as much time to study. I'm plannig to spend at least 10 to 15 hours per week studying and hopefully by December I'll be ready to take the exam.

Assuming that you have some HR experience the 10-15 hrs a week you mention sounds good. I took a prep course at a local university which was based on the SHRM learning system. The classroom sessions were a big help to me, but certainly not necessary.

I did make a point of studying an hour or so several times a week for couple of months before the exam. Im sure a lot of people are successful with a lot less. PHR is mostly fact-based so it does require the effort to assimilate the volume of facts required.

Dont worry about feeling confident about taking the test, most of us never got that feeling. After taking the test I couldnt have told you whether I passed or not, but did by a substantial margin. The CD that generated trial test questions was a big help to me.
Good Luck

Thanks Ida. Yes I do have a little experience in HR, I've been working as a Recruiter for about 2 1/2 years now. I was also thinking about taking this HR Certification course at one of the local universities to help me with the PHR exam, but the classes don't start until the Fall and I didn't want to wait that long. I've decided to the SHRM Self-Study Program and see how that works out. I have to admit that on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the best, I would rate my HR knowledge at about a 4. I'm sure there's a lot to learn, but I'm totally up for the challenge. Wish me luck!

I took (and passed) the PHR exam in December. I started studying about 2 months in advance. What worked for me was taking one of the 2 practice exams HRCI has and really studying the parts that I needed to brush up on. I took the second exam 2 weeks before the test and then focused my last 2 weeks on my two lowest scoring areas.

I would really advise taking one of the practice exams before you begin studying because I found that the types of questions they asked weren't what I was expecting and had I studied based on my assumptions I probably wouldn't have passed.

Finally, I didn't take one of the prep courses but my colleague did (she took the SPHR exam) and she found that the information covered didn't really prepare her for the types of questions she encountered (and she did not pass the exam). Another colleague did self study and passed the SPHR.

Thanks mtaylor692, that sounds like a great idea. I plan on taking a few practice exams before taking the actual exam. I haven't fully looked through all the materials, but if I remember correctly, there are a few practice exams that come with the package. Like I said earlier I don't have a lot of HR knowledge, so I think I'll wait a while before I take the first practice exam just to see where I weak and where I'm strong and I'll build off of that. Thanks.
