I was checking out http://www.hatefiring.com (I was lured in by their funny, irreverent office ads) and I'm considering using online pre-employment assessments to evaluate new hires. Has anyone had any positive or negative experiences with pre-employment assessments, personality tests, or evaluations?

This issue has been around for a long time and you should get a wide variety of opinions. IMHO when they are done they are relied on too heavily rather than merely seen as one single piece of information.

You often have a tool designed by a PHD but used by a BA to screen. The BA does not understand all the tool limitations but uses it as a decider. As a result I am against them.

Honestly, I find very little positive out of pre-screening personality testing. I don't find most to be accurate in any long term sense. At some point subjectivity comes into play when deciding on the what the "correct" results are.

I have found some to be useful as training/career builders (such as Myers Briggs for teamwork exercises).

But I too hate spam.

Like others, I am still skeptical of personality profiles that purport to be able to pin down characteristics of successful employees for any job. Ive taken a lot of them but have yet to see consistent results. There are legal considerations too if significant weight is given to them in the hiring process. If a test relates to specific job skills (cash handling, equipment operation etc) and has been documented to be a reliable predictor of performance then it could be useful.

Spam sucks.

I agree with RRupert -- Myers Briggs is a great tool, particularly for helping people understand what they may be best suited for, or even why an employee does something a particular way. signed, an ESTJ. *wink*

I have mixed feelings about them. My company uses them and gets a lot of good people, but I don't think the tests really tell much because at the same time we have more turn around then I'd like. So maybe si maybe no, I do know they make potential hires nervous.
