Hi,

I have a BS in psychology and about three years HR exp (7 yrs other work exp after college prior to HR). I'm currently working on my PHR cert. Once I have the PHR I want to obtain a master's degree. My question is which would be more practical?

There are two programs I'm interested in - 1.) MBA in Management (some electives are HR) The reason I'm interested - It's a large easily recognizable brick and mortar school. My undergrad is psych so I want the hard business knowledge (finance, accounting, marketing etc)
2.) Masters in HR (all HR, all the time) I think the school would be much easier to get into. The courses would be easier and the info would serve me well. It is a classroom based school, but it's one with national and international campuses (not sure the exact terminology - like Keiser, Webster, Pheonix - anyone know?)

Any suggestions? I want to stay in HR definitely. My goeals are to move into strategic HR positions - Director, VP within the next 7-10 years.

My recommendation to anyone would be to ignore an academic concentration (major) in HR at all costs. especially if you have a non business undergrad. Go with the MBA.

I'm about 98% in agreement with HRPro - given a choice between an MBA from a fully accredited program (none of the DETC accreditation nonsense) and a graduate degree in HR, go with the MBA. You'll need the background in other business disciplines, notably finance and accounting.

My 2% disagreement is if you're considering one of the top HR programs in the country. Cornell, University of Illinois, and Michigan State Univ all have exceptional graduate HR programs and if you have an opportunity to go with one of those you would be wise to consider them.
