Hi all,
I am wondering if you could give me some guidance on this matter as I am a HR analyst from Asia. My husband wants to go back to the US and with the current economy being what it is, I wonder how job market for HR is currently.
My original background is actuarial science with 3 years in insurance R&D and 3 in HR as Compensation & Benefit analyst/specialist. My husband is seeking to relocate back to the US and would like to be back in Michigan/Indiana area.
Do you think that now is the right time to return to the US or should I stay put where I am where my job is secured?
Thanks.

I don't have much advice, but Michigan in general terms, is not a good place to look for work right now.
Have you heard of the problems the automotive industry is having? More lay-offs coming as GM is talking about idling the factories until inventory is absorbed - something like 15 weeks or more. That alone will ripple through more than just the Michigan area.
That said, people are still being hired, but I am not very familiar with the job market in those states. I do know it is tough in Nevada.

There are HR jobs out there, but the competition of them is pretty tough. Having multiple skills is an asset that could help. You can also run a three-pronged job search when increase your chance of landing one. With a diverse background you might also get some consulting work. Marc is right however about Michigan having a high unemployment rate currently.
Good luck

I live in New York and I can tell you that things are still a bit tough here. There are jobs opening up, but the competition for them is fierce.
I'd suggest maybe waiting just a few more months until jobs reappear, as it looks like our economy is beginning to turn the page.
Hope everything works out for the best!

Daily Q&A
How to Address Flagging Motivation?
How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
