I've been in risk management/insurance for over 20 years. I am experienced in labor law from the loss prevention/litigation angle; however, would like to move into HR, perhaps employee relations. I take the SPHR exam in June. Any tips once I have the designation for my career transition? Thanks.

Before answering, I think I'd like to know more about your HR experience. SHRM states that you need a minimum of 4 years of professional HR experience to sit for the exam, so I'm a bit uncertain about what HR experience you actually have.

I've spent years as a risk manager / claims manager handling employment investigations / dealing with OSHA /and training on sexual harassment, and other employment issues. I've presented at SHRM, I'm a trainer for Insurance Journal in HR issues.

Thanks - that helps. I would recommend that you look at some larger companies which would be more likely to place a higher value on your experience that would a small to mid-sized one. Leverage your experience into an employee relations role which, I think, would be a natural fit with what you've already done.
The Training route might also be worthwhile for you to explore, but I think ER is the better route.

Thanks! Great idea. I'm thinking diversity / employee relations. I do have training designation, as well.

Daily Q&A
How to Address Flagging Motivation?
How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
