Sorry to just be getting back to you. How are your studies going? I did all self study and used 2 books, the thick book "PHR/SPHR study guide" (small image of lighthouse on upper left corner of cover. and another simple booklet that seems to be out of print. I can check the name and post later.

But the biggest values for me were purchasing the 2 assessment tests from HRCI. I took the first one and really focused on the areas I was weak in. I took the second about 10 days before to see my progress and cram in the areas I was still weak in. Then I used every free online test I could find.

Also, I am taking the SPHR on 1/21 so I'm back in the studying plan. I figured it would be best to take it while it was all stillf resh and before the criteria changed.

Let mek now how your studies are going.

The exam may be a difficult one that is why no one is explaining it.

study hard and prepare very well. well, that's how it should be for any kind of exam and the best preparation of course is to review, study, practice, read more about the topic.

It's been well over decade since I sat for the PHR (old "dead-tree" version)  Even though I had nearly 10 years of experience at the time, I knew the test would cover may areas where I had no background (unions, O&D etc)  so I enrolled in a local college prep class.  Bear in mind that the last time I was in a college classroom LBJ was president, not a freeway in north Dallas.  I muddled through  the class , read and re-read the SHRMLS books over and over. The trial test questions were  a big help since they showed me what sections I needed more study on.

A few weeks before the test my daughter had to move her wedding up to the same weekend due to a scheduling problem. So I have a house full of relatives the week before.  The night before the test I'm cramming and we get a thunderstorm which knocks the power out. I'm taking this as an omen that I am not destined to do well on this thing.

In those days we had to wait 4-6 weeks for the test results.  Needless to say I was shocked when I opened the letter and learned that I had somehow managed to pass with over a 100 point margine!  While relieved, I instantly felt stupid for not having taken the SPHR (which I did 6 months later)

Study well,  do your trial tests.  Focus on the areas you're not experienced in.  (It seemed like mine was about half union questions. Ok maybe not half, but it sure felt like it.)  Don't stress yourself out, just focus. 1) Read the questions carefully. I found I was misreading some in my hurry to get done. I actually had plenty of time. 2) review the answer options and eliminate the most implauseable ones.  3) choose between the remaining ones.   4) If possible, go back and review the ones you weren't sure of when you finish. If you get any new ideas on the topic change it, if not leave it.

Good luck, and let us know how you do.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
