I have been asked this question millions of times and my response is usually "I am in HR."
But at a holiday party, I got the third degree from a college student who wasn't satisfied with that answer and wanted to know more.
These were some of the questions I was asked.
What are your duties?
What are the skill sets needed for a successful HR career?
Do you need to have knowledge of labor law? What type of training are you involved in?

Is there a question here?
Nice to see that there's at least one college student thinking ahead and doing some career research.

So what was your response? Did you have trouble with the questions? Are you having trouble explaining how you add value to your company?
If your answer is yes then you should stop and reconsider what you are doing.
If your answer is no then this series of questions should be easy and the person that asked should come away with a clear understanding of your role...........
So what did you respond?

I just told him my job is like "Madmen". Everyone drinks scotch in the office, eat deli sandwiches and hit on the secretaries.
Kidding. We don't hit on the secretaries.
I told I primarily deal with benefits administration and Federal and State employment law compliance.
In terms of skill sets, well just be well organized and be able put out fires when they come up.
I am not a lawyer, but I know a bit of labor law.
As for training, I pretty much learned on the job.
What would be your response if you were asked these questions?

At a party, all I'd be prepared to say is "Hiring, firing and everything in between."

I have a simple one word response when I am asked "what do you do?" I reply, "when?"

The generic title for my position is HR Analyst. My role is to provide our decision makers with the information and data they need to make decisions and then to help evaluate the outcomes of those decisions.
It's a great role when things work, not so much when they don't.
My training is eclectic, I studied Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Program Evaluation, and Human Resource Development. But I tend to fraw more on my prior work experience as a production supervisor and accountant.
