I like the idea of keeping the style manual at your desk. I suggest that to my students--asking them to hold on to their Business Communication textbooks, handouts, notes, etc., as those materials can be invaluable when attempting to draft a business message in the workplace. Of course, they sell the books back to the bookstore--probably destroy their handouts and notes as well, too. I keep numerous reference guides at my desk--and I bring several to my face-to-face classes to show students my "sticky" notes and to demonstrate that I, too, have difficulty sometimes with "affect" and "effect" and "principal" and "principle"--just as they do. I also provide URLs to online grammar sites, dictionaries, etc., so they can use them in that forum since they seem to be spending all their time there. I even tell them about the Apps I download to my iPhone (dictionary, thesaurus, and grammar apps) to assist me. I still believe they don't quite "get it" when I'm talking about the importance of effective writing skills.
Thanks again for posting! Virginia

I think you do about all you can by referring them to various references and emphasizing how important good written communication skills are. I'm guessing that at some point in the future most will have an "ah ha!" moment and will understand what you were trying to tell them.

The way to get their attention on this is ask them to consider the person or persons in business that are likely to hire them.
What will appeal to those folks?
What will make you appear to be a better candidate?
Mnay if not most business problems boil down to communication issues. One side to the discussion just is not understanding the meaning or context of what the other person is talking about.
Great oral and written communication skills will set you apart and make you the most attractive candidate.
Great writing skills = more $$$$$$$$$

Daily Q&A
How to Address Flagging Motivation?
How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
