I would also love to hear from anyone in specialist areas (specifically recruitment) who were successful in making the transition to a generalist role and how they were able to there.

I worked in a larger company as a recruiter. Since I interacted with the managers regularly, I became the "face of HR" for them. As a result, they came to me with many HR issues. Rather than simply forwarding them to the appropriate person, I saw the issue through to resolution with the help of the appropriate HR person. They were usually happy to involve me so that I was a go between and communicated with the managers. This provided me with some broader HR knowledge and made the transition easier.

For a results driven person, moving out of recruiting is a difficult move. I had metrics to measure my effectiveness as a recruiter and the internal drive to be results oriented. The competitive part of me misses that sometimes.

Another suggestion is to expand your role from recruiter specialist to recruiting manager, managing a team of recruiters. This will give you a broader perspective and involve you in broader HR discussions.

I had a very similar experience as pf above. I started as a technical recruiter with a large telecom company, but got lots of exposure to compensation and benefits in the normal course of recruiting and onboarding.

After a couple of years, I was promoted to a generalist manager of a division with high recruiting needs which gave me additional insights in the ER/LR pieces. I've always enjoyed recruiting more than other HR disciplines, but I gained enough from the initial recruiting assignment to transition relatively seamlessly into a generalist role.

Thanks to both of you. I'm beginning to see how the transition can play out, and it seems very do-able for me too.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
