I wonder what other comapnies do for their employees? Would you offer some feedback? We have an employee who's apartment complex caught on fire yesterday. The employee is a salesperson and so he was out on the road when it happened. He nor his spouse have been allowed to return to the building until the situation is under control. At this point, the employees spent one night at a friend's house, obviously has no access to his clothes/personal belongings etc. His co-workers want to donate money and offer him a "gift". However I wanted to see if other companies have specific things they do in addition to what his co-workers are interested in doing? Can you tell me if your company has done something in the past (i.e.earthquake, tornadoes, and natural disasters that affected your employee's homes)?

Tread cautiously on this one. Keep in mind that what you do in this situation will establish a precedent and a level of expectation for future similar and not-so-similar situations.

The employees banding together to support their co-worker is great and you should encourage that.

You will want to advise the employee on leave options (with or without pay per your company's policy). You also want to advise the employee of his ability to withdraw money from his 401K or obtain a loan against the 401k. And if you want to go this far, offer the employee a no interest loan (but get some legal advice on drawing up loan documents and provisions).

While I can certainly understand the individual's plight and agree with the "lets band together and do something for Joe and Jane" approach, the tread careful advice is spot on.

Lets not forget that this person has the obligation to protect themselves by purchasing renter's insurance which covers this type of loss. If they remebered to do this then the monies should be there for their needs.

Agree with the others on advice to tread carefully.

Do what you can based on policies you currently have in place but be careful about setting up new policies/precedents.
