Do you think e-learning, lifelong learning, web-based training and any other permutation of this learning medium has the staying power to improve skills management, increase retention rates, decrease or arrest turnover and generally improve the caliber of workers in your organization?

The e-Learning Place (http://www.e-learningwebsite.com/forum/) is an interesting site that deals with this topic and more

I think online learning does have staying power. Employees are being asked to do more with less and online learning allows workers to take their training at their convienience, when they are ready to learn, and can devote time to the learning. It is also a way to standardize and document the training received by employees in various locations or at various times. Online learning can be used for visual, auditory, and tactile/kinestetic learning styles. Online training will not replace instructor-led training, but it can be used to teach and test knowledge and the instructor-led can be used for the learning and demonstrating mastery of the skills.

I think differently; e-learning only works or those who like learning through a reference book without personal interaction. There is no exchange of viewpoints, no group learning, and no one to ask questions about on minor points of interest that could prove crucial to learner understanding. Also, e-laerning is based on the assumption that the material is 100% and 100% contextual, which it is usually not.

Its like teaching leadership via an interenet e-learning tool. completely impractical and unrealistic.
