SWOT is a great way to get your employees to voice their opinions about the helth of the compa. UT, do not just give a SWOT survey to your employees. Have sall meetings of 5 to 10 or 12 employees and do a group SWOT analysis. This isa great team bulding opportuity and will also help them to "buy in" to any need for change. If you provide pizza or sandwiches you will relax the atmosphere and get better participation. Make it fun!
Performance Reviews are not the problem; it is how you do them. Rule 1 - Do not give a raise during the time scheduled for a review. If give a raise during the review that is all they are waiting to hear and is all they will hear. Rule 2 - Bespecific in the review topics and make the topics relate directly tothe employee's job. Rule 3 - this is not the time to hit the employee with new grips or praises. There should be no real surprises on the Review.
This is the time you set aside to axctually talk with the employee about him/her. Done right they will do more to improve mora, without spending much money, than anything else that you can do. Have Fun!
