Coffee Talk: Train ’em and Pay ’em

Retention and training are brewing as hot topics for java joints, an expert says.

On the surface, working in a coffee shop seems like a pretty simple job. Yet store owners face the same challenges in skills development that large corporations do, says Bruce MillettoAmerican Barista & Coffee School in Portland, Oregon. In Espresso101.com, an online newsletter for the coffee industry, Milletto writes: “Your goal is to hire, train and retain great employees. It costs you time and effort to bring on new people and get them up to speed. To keep the employees who can think fast, solve problems and welcome every guest, you have to do more than just choose them with care. You must train them well and pay them fairly.” Sound advice indeed. Have a second cup.
